나의 작업은 'Filigree cane'에 대한 관심으로부터 시작되었다.

필리그리 케인이란 투명 유리에 흰색 또는 화려한 컬러의 선 패턴을 넣은 유리 막대기를 만든 것을 총 칭한다. 처음엔 무작정 화려한 필리그리 케인을 만들고 싶었다. 그것이 내가 주로 다루는 기법인 블로잉과 잘 어울린다고 생각하였다. 그러면서 동시에 나의 정체성을 찾으려고 노력하였다. 어떤 케인을 만들고 어떻게 작품에 녹아내야 하는가를 고민하고 있을 때, 우연히 작업실 앞마당에 흩날리고 있는 민들레 홑씨들을 보았다. 민들레 홑씨들은 흩어짐과 자리 잡기를 반복하며 피어나는데, 그것이 마치 어딘가에 소속되고 정착을 하기 위한 과정 속의 나를 보는 것 같았다.남아있는 홑씨들을 가만히 들여다보니 촘촘하면서도 엉성하게 얽혀 있었고, 엉성함 속의 여백들은 오히려 새롭고 무한한 가능성을 담고 있는 듯 보였다.

 나의 작업은 나의 상상력으로부터 내가 구현할 수 있는 요소들이 내가 다루어내는 블로잉 테크닉과 조합되며 시작된다. 큰 색유리 덩어리로 작은 실들을 뽑고, 그것을 모아 패턴을 지닌 유리 실을 뽑는 반복적인 작업 과정 후 다시 얇은 유리 실들을 한데 모아 나의 숨을 불어넣는다. 내가 만든 커다란 홑씨들은 내가 직접 경험한 곳, 경험하고 싶은 곳, 각종 미디어를 통하여 보고 듣고 느껴 본 곳을 생각나게 한다. 내 기억 속 어딘가에서 무심코 자리 잡고 있는 생각과 기억이기에 눈에 띄는 화려함은 지양하고 싶었다. 이 때문에 유리의 투명한 물성이 아닌 반투명한 성질에 집중하였다. 얼핏 보면 지나쳐질 얇고 작은 유리 실들로 들여다보아야 드러나는 잔잔한 화려함을 보여주고 싶었다. 그것이 내가 표현하고자 하는 것, 또 나의 정서와 잘 맞는다고 생각했기 때문이다.

 한 개의 필리그리 케인 속 얇은 여러 색유리 선은 처음엔 일자로 곧게 뻗어 있지만 모아서 부는 과정에서 중심축 한 곳으로 모이게 된다. 이때 유리의 온도, 도구의 쓰임, 파이프에 바람을 넣는 세기 등 외부의 압력에 의해 살짝 휘거나 중심이 다른 곳으로 이동하게 된다. 이런 자연스러운 변형 들을 작업에 그대로 담아냈다. 라인의 바닥 중심축은 유리의 양을 늘려 버블을 크게 만들면 만들수록 자연스럽게 자리를 잡는다. 난 유리실들이 모여 하나가 되는 바닥 중심에 집중했다. 여러 갈래의 유리 실들은 바닥의 중심축으로부터 넓게 퍼져나간다. 유리 실이 모이는 바닥의 중심은 홑씨의 견고하고 질긴 줄기대의 시작이며 그 중심축에서 큰 에너지가 뿜어져 나오는 것 같은 힘을 느낀다. 나의 작업 일부분은 반듯하게 연마되어 있고 일부분은 옆으로 누워있는데 이것 또한 유리 실의 중심에 포커스를 맞추었기 때문이다.

 기(器)의 입구 부분은 연마 작업을 통해 형태를 잡기에 자유롭고 부드러운 곡선의 형태로 마감된다. 연마 작업을 하다 보면 그라인더를 쥐고 있는 손 힘의 세기에 따라 유리가 깎여 나가는 면적에 차이가 생기면서 자연스러운 곡선을 만들어낸다. 이렇게 완성되는 나의 작품에서는, 유리를 반투명처리 하여 그 속에선 포근함을, 연마 작업으로 표현되는 곡선의 부드러움을, 그리고 얇고 작은 실들의 얽힘으로 드러나는 간결한 화려함을 통해 단단한 유리의 내면처럼 그릇되지 않고 유하게 살아가고자 하는 마음을 담아냈다.

 My work starts with an interest in 'Filigree Glass.'

A filigree cane is an umbrella term for transparent glass sticks embellished with white or colorfully decorated line patterns. At first, I aimed to create colorful filigree canes since I thought it would turn out wonderfully with my blowing technique, which I am already quite accustomed to. At the same time, I endeavored to seek for my identity. While thinking about what kind of cane to make and how to blend my identity into my works of art, I ran into some dandelion puffs’ seeds floating around in the front yard of my studio. Dandelion puffs bloom after a repetition of scattering and settling, reminding me of my struggle to fit into a certain group or location. When observed closely, the remaining seeds appeared dense yet loosely tangled, and the looseness seemed to contain unlimited potential.

 My work begins when elements from my imagination and my blowing technique collaborate. I pull out tiny threads from a large lump of colored glass, repeatedly blend them to create patterned glass threads, and breathe them into a bundle of thin glass threads. My great dandelion puffs remind me of the sites I experienced– both in real life and through a variety of media and hope to experience. Since these memories have remained unconsciously in my mind, I refrained from overly fancy decorations. Therefore, I concentrated more on the translucency rather than the transparency of glass. I aimed to highlight the tranquil glamour accomplished through the thin glass threads that might seem trivial at a glance.

 A variety of straight colored lines in a single filigree cane merges into the axis through the blowing process. The center transforms according to the temperature, application of tools, and the strength of air added through the pipe. I attempted to deliver this natural transformation in my works of art. The axis of the line’s bottom automatically settles down as the amount of glass increases to create a larger bubble. I focused on the bottom axis where the glass threads merges into one. Multiple glass threads spread vastly from the bottom axis. The bottom axis where the glass threads all meet represents the starting point of the dandelion puff’s sturdy and durable stem and we can feel a great gust of energy from the axis here. Part of my work is neatly polished while the other is leaning linear; this also attributes to my focus on the axis of the glass threads.

 The lip of the vessel is completed into a natural and soft curve– making it easy to grasp, through a polishing process. During this process, a natural curve can be achieved through the difference of volumes carved from the glass which can be controlled by the strength of the craftsmen’s hands. My work embraces the translucency of glass to represent coziness, polishing process to accentuate the essence of soft curves, and, finally, tangling of multiple thin threads to visualize simple yet extravagant beauty. In the end, I aimed to reflect the pure and tranquil quality of glass to the attitudes toward our lives.
